Studio Workshops

Studio WorkshopsStudio  workshops

from PERC Photography School cover many photography topics and disciplines. Our studio workshops are meant for photographers of all skill and equipment levels.

In our studio workshops you are introduced to an amazing array of gear, from 5 different types of lighting, to light modifiers and reflectors. Depending on the session, you may work with wireless flash triggers, tethered cameras, and Infrared (IR) gear. Other items may include props, backdrops, filters, and more.

Studio Workshops Topics

The PERC Photography School studio workshops cover posing, lighting, composition, product photography, macro, and more. They also cover maternity, infant, children, pet, and family portraits. Finally, some studio workshops cover editing in Lightroom, Photoshop and Photoshop Elements. Custom studio workshops can cover any topic you may need.

Also, studio workshops include immediate feedback, camera and lighting guidance, and moral support from experienced photographers.

Attendees at our studio workshops make new friends, have fun learning, and learn to create portfolios that others envy and enjoy.

MACRO & CLOSE-UP PHOTOGRAPHY MADE EASY (103)

Close-Up and Macro Photography are two of the most rewarding forms of photography. Close-up photography can be practiced by anyone with a camera and a lens. Macro photography delves even deeper into the unseen world of detail, and it can be practiced by anyone who has a camera and a few simple accessories! That's right, you do NOT need an expensive macro lens to shoot macro photography.

Just because your lens or camera says "macro" on it, or has a tulip (macro) icon, does not mean that it shoots true macro images. This class, for students of all skill levels, from raw beginner to advanced, teaches you how to achieve full detail, high resolution close-ups (about 1/3 of life size) and real macro images that are life size or greater (1:1 , 2:1, 3:1 and even larger!) without breaking the bank on an expensive macro lens.

After this hands-on course, where you use a wide range of specialty "macro and close-up" accessories to photograph many fun and colorful objects, your DSLR, advanced Point & Shoot and mirrorless camera images will have far more detail than if you used regular digital photography techniques (or telephoto lenses) and just cropped your photos to mimic real macro and close-up photography.

You will learn:

  • how to easily (and temporarily) convert all your existing lenses into macro lenses for $20 to $40 (these accessories for most cameras are available for purchase during the session),
  • Depth of Field tricks to get more of your subjects in focus,
  • camera settings for indoor and outdoor macro photography,
  • when to increase ISO,
  • when and how to easily add more light for increased Depth of Field,
  • tripod techniques for enhanced imagery,
  • how to use all 7 different accessories that help you create fantastic macro images,
  • which accessories to use under different conditions and when to use them,
  • about working distance,
  • how to shoot using focus stacking techniques (even if your camera does not have an auto focus stacking setting),
  • about minimum focusing distance,
  • which macro lens to buy for your needs, if you want one,
  • the very important differences between Canon and Nikon macro capabilities (No other Macro course covers these issues and explains the simple workarounds.)

This three hour workshop is a blend of lecture and hands-on practice. So bring your camera, its manual, fresh batteries,  a tripod (if you have one), and blank memory cards. Tripods can be rented for $10 for the session if you do not have one. External flash units can be rented for the session for $5. Call 919.576.5331 to reserve rental gear after you have registered.

MASTERING FLASH - ON & OFF CAMERA

Are you intimidated by your flash or confused about when and how to use to use it?

Do you want to eliminate shadows when using your flash?

Do you want to avoid “hot spots” when using your flash?

Or do you just want to get the most out of your flash unit?

If so, then this is the workshop for you!

In this class you will learn how to:

  • control internal and external flashes,
  • bounce flash,
  • use light modifiers (reflectors, diffusers and more),
  • use multiple wireless flash units,
  • use TTL metering,
  • use Flash Exposure Compensation (FEC),
  • set custom functions for your flash,
  • "drag your shutter",
  • use your camera’s X-synch speed (and how to get around it),
  • learn about Focal Plane / High speed sync, and
  • more!

You will get hands-on experience using your flash and learn about several types of diffusers, a miniature softbox, a snoot, grids and other light modifiers made explicitly for external camera flashes. We will also use a wireless triggering system to fire off-camera flashes for various creative lighting effects.

Finally, you will learn the mysteries of manual flash so that you can match fill light to ambient light – which is the ultimate test of your ability to use a flash!

Bring your camera and external flash (if you have one), both manuals, fresh batteries for both, lens(es), and empty memory cards. External flashes are available for rent for most cameras for $10.00 for the session. Call 919.576.5331 after registering to reserve one.
